SPF in winter

Did you stash away your SPF cream this month? This is a common mistake we all make – "It's not sunny, so I don't need SPF".
The truth is that we should be wearing SPF daily. UVA rays can penetrate cloud and are present all day, all year round. UVA also penetrates glass and windows, so our skin is still vulnerable to sun damage even if we are working indoors.

There are 2 Ultraviolet rays that impact our skin.
  • Ultraviolet A is a long, lower energy ray that penetrates deeper into the dermis and damages collagen. Hence this causes aging.

  • Ultraviolet B is higher energy and penetrates the epidermis (which is the superficial layer of the skin) and can cause burns.

Both UVA and UVB cause cellular and dNA damage leading to wrinkles, thick skin textures, hyperpigmentation and skin cancers.

SPF30 blocks out 97% of UV radiation, but we need to make sure it acts on both UVA and UVB rays. SPF only blocks 55% of free radical generated from UV exposure.

Hence applying a Vitamin C prior to the SPF will help clear up the free radicals. In brighter regions (sunny climates, winter sun), opt for a minimum SPF 50.

So here are some of our favourites:
  • Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF30
  • SkinCeuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defence Suncreeen SPF50
