Elastin is an extra cellular matrix protein that lends elasticity and resilience to tissues. Elastin is found in the dermal layer of skin and provides the elasticity to our skin so it recoils back when pinched. The amount of elastin in our skin decreases with age.
We can improve the elastin content in our skin by lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, regular exercise, daily SPF and eating foods that help increase elastin production such as leafy greens, citrus fruits, berries, oily fish and nuts.
Other ways to improve elastin production is to use Retinoids which help boost our skin's metabolism and increase both elastin and collagen production. Treatments such as microneedling and Profound also boost elastin production.
